My Garden Moves in Slow Motion

Long overdue for an update!

But you didn't miss much lol. While everyone throughout the bloggosphere is harvesting their large vegetables, I'm still struggling to grow the simplest of crops...

Best example being my lettuce!

I sowed these lettuce seeds in mid March. 10 weeks later, it's finally looking like a lettuce but nowhere close to harvestable. and the slugs/snails got to the bottom leaf! Grrrrrrr.

And while everyone harvests their beautiful broccoli, mine looks so puny!

I guess the good thing is that it's still alive and no pests seem to bother it :) So maybe there is still hope! These were sown in mid-March as well. Maybe I need better nutrients in the soil?

Well all is not so pathetic in my garden though. Slow, sure, but there is definitely some progress in my garden that I can't help but be proud of :)

Top Left: Zucchini blossoms
Top Right: Close to harvest Peas
Bottom Left: Corn corner
Bottom Right: Tiny but very healthy Basil

Not only that, my spinach in pots have been working out great :D They're growing so much faster, and seems to enjoy the partial shade it gets from the herb pots on the shelf above them.

Oh and we finally got rain a week and a half ago. (28 consecutive days of no rain! VERY rare for Seattle) It's been consistently showering daily since then so my garden is just soaking it all in and lovin it! :)

My garden is moving along very slowly this week too. It was growing by leaps and bounds while we were having the nice warm and dry weather but this past week has slooowed everything down. Hopefully summer will hit us here soon.

I must admit I am horribly jealous of your chickens. It was my goal to get some going on our little "urban homestead" this year but my city is not as with the changing times as Portland and Seattle are. Very frustrating and probably a future blog post rant! ;)

Cynthia (Awesome name! LOL) ~

To be honest, I live in Renton, which is right next to Seattle but actually do not allow chickens unless you have 5,000 sq. ft. of land or something... I have what, 2,000? ;D So yes, they are secret chickens. bwahahaha. If anyone asks, I have fat parrots in my backyard!

Cynthia, you can call me Cynthia too. Don't fret none. By August I trust you'll have loads of veggies. Try to give them enough sunshine and they will come around. Patience is tough sometimes. We had a couple hot/warm days, and some of our fruits doubled in size almost. Just wait, you'll see.

Haha should I call you Cynthia too?

Thank you for the kind words :) That makes me so hopeful. I do get a tad impatient. I guess I should realize that we're still only experiencing highs of 75 instead of 90's like the other places. Heh heh. :D *waits patiently for the sunshine and heat*

Great blog! It looks like we are in the same situation on opposite sides of the country...trying to start our first garden! Also, I think New England has been getting your rain! Luckily, we have had a few rays of sunshine, but it is back to raining again! Best of luck! I look forward to following your progress!

Wow - that's really dry for Seattle! We got a few showers down here in PDX but it doesn't seem as wet as normal, eh?

Broccoli are heavy feeders and like to be watered - maybe add some balanced organic fertilizer, scratch it in and then add about an inch of compost over that around the base as mulch. Should perk your broccoli right up.

...and hey - you got spinach to grow! - you're doin' better then me in that dept. Mine never really manifested. =(

Liz~ Thanks! I look forward to all your progress too! :)

Jenn~ We finally got rain for about a week but now it's back to constant sunshine again. The garden loves the heat and sunshine but my lazy butt isn't happy with having to go out and water them every day haha.

It's still not too late for spinach! I'm keeping mine outside in the shade and it's doing awesome :D
